Multi-National Force, Beirut, Casualties, 1982 to 1984

This is the only, complete, listing of all contributing nations’ and organisations’ fatal casualties, during the period of the MNF Deployment, August 1982 to April 1984.

There are, in total, 399 named individuals on this Memorial Page

I am deeply indebted to the wide range of websites and published sources from many nations that I have been able to access, in order to put this list together.

Although there were multiple sources for the images used on this site, the majority of the images used for the United States MNF casualties were obtained from the

Beirut Memorial On-Line website

and in turn, directly from the family/next of kin. All copyrights and permission for use are reserved by the family/next of kin. Downloading, capturing and reuse of these images is strictly prohibited. Please contact Beirut Memorial On Line for with any questions or inquiries.

Copyright of all the images remains with the sources listed at the end of the page, at no time may images be used from this page, for any reason, without the express permission of the copyright holders

All the names can be found below along with a photo of the individual, where possible.

Sadly, I have not been able to find a reliable picture for 7 of the French MNF and 2 of the US MNF, 1 of UNTSO and 15 of the UNIFIL casualties

Included in the information (where possible) is Rank, Name, Unit, Age, Date of Birth, Hometown, Region and Country of Birth.

Where possible, I have added details of the incident in which the individual (s) were killed.

22 March 1983

Died of wounds from 15 March 1983.

On 15 March, also an Italian patrol of the ‘San Marco’ Battalion came under attack. Two vehicles were driving from the airport to the central sector, when a RPG fired from a Shiite mosque construction site hit the second car. Four soldiers were wounded; two of which seriously. The marines of the ‘San Marco’ immediately returned fire and BGen Angioni (ItalCon Force Commander) launched a mission to find the supposedly three attackers. He wanted to demonstrate the Italian ability – even at night – to react to such a hostile act, without retaliating with indiscriminate violence. Despite the quick arrival of reinforcements and ambulances, the nineteen-year-old conscript Filippo Montesi died days later in a Roman hospital. He would remain the sole Italian killed in action (KIA) in Beirut and the first soldier of the Italian army to die in combat since the Second World War.

Filippo died of his wounds on March 22. He was part of ITALCON, operation “Libano 2”

6 July 1983

A bomb-damaged building collapsed on nine French peacekeeping soldiers and four Lebanese workers.

The French spokesman said the soldiers were clearing an area around the building, heavily damaged by a bomb explosion last summer when it collapsed.

A statement by the Defense Ministry in Paris said three of the nine soldiers were rescued, with one of them hospitalized. French and Lebanese soldiers worked alongside Lebanese Red Cross workers to get underneath the mound of shattered concrete. A line of soldiers passed small pieces of debris hand-to-hand from one area of the collapsed four-story building while cranes and bulldozers tried to move giant chunks of concrete. ‘The whole structure came down into a 25-foot pile of concrete. Several Lebanese workers helping the French were also trapped under the rubble. Additional French troops sealed off the neighborhood, on Bliss Street near the Saudi Arabian embassy.

16 October 1983

During the late afternoon of 16 October, small arms and machine gun fire raked the lines of Alpha Company’s position. Marine snipers returned scattered fire over the next few hours, but at 7:15 p.m., the volume of fire became intense. Rocket-propelled grenades impacted the library building at the Lebanese Science University. One hit the breezeway and wounded three Marines. Alpha Company returned fire at numerous targets, but the volume of hostile fire was too great to allow a medevac helicopter to land near its position. The British contingent offered the assistance of their armored Ferret Scout cars, which escorted a convoy with the two seriously wounded Marines to the Lebanese MOD. From there a helicopter medevac took the wounded to USS Iwo Jima. The medevac chopper was fired on en route but was not hit.

The Marines fired two Dragon antitank rounds at a machine gun bunker at 9:40 p.m. after the firing increased directly at Marine positions. At 10:03 p.m., Capt. Michael Ohler, a forward air controller with Alpha Company, was struck in the head and killed by small arms. The firefight had spread to numerous buildings to the south and west resulting in the company being virtually besieged in the university buildings. At 11:00 p.m., they suffered two more wounded with shrapnel wounds from RPG fire. The fighting tapered off after midnight; however, sporadic fire and explosions continued throughout the night.

Captain Michael J. Ohler ANGLICO, 2 Force Service Support Group, 24 Marine Amphibious Unit, US Marine Corps, 28, 06/02/1955, Huntington, New York, USA

23 October 1983

Beirut International Airport, Terminal Building

HQ, 1/8 BLT, Sunday, 06:22 AM

1st. Battalion, 8th. Marine Regiment, Battalion Landing Team

241 United States of America Forces were killed as a result of the Suicide Truck Bombing, at the Beirut International Airport, Terminal Building.

115 US personnel were wounded.

1 Civilian, a Lebanese Concession Owner, was also killed.

The explosion of the Marine Corps building in Beirut, Lebanon, created a large cloud of smoke that was visible from miles away.

An FBI study later revealed that the explosion which collapsed the BLT building had been caused by explosive material wrapped around tubes of propane or another type of highly volatile gas. This boosted the explosive force of the bomb to the equivalent of more than 12,000 pounds of TNT. In addition to collapsing the building, this was enough to make a crater measuring 39 feet by 20 1/2 feet and 8 feet deep. In doing this, the explosion destroyed a seven-inch-thick concrete floor, which was reinforced by steel rods, each 1 3/4 inches in diameter. The FBI also concluded that, even if the truck had not reached the lobby, and had exploded instead on the roadway at a distance of 330 feet from the building, nearly the same amount of damage and a significant number of casualties still would have resulted.

The explosion killed 220 US Marine, 18 US Navy and 3 US Army personnel.

The majority of those killed were Marines from the 1st. Battalion, 8th. Marine Regiment.

In October 1983, rescuers probe the wreckage of the U.S. Marine command building near the Beirut airport, a day after a terrorist attack killed 241 U.S. service members.

The search for survivors and recovery operations continued until 30 October 1983

The Westland WG 13 Lynx No. 27 helicopter, assigned to the frigate Dupleix (D641) and piloted by the ensign Grilli had just dropped off passengers from the aircraft carrier Clemenceau in the port of Beirut, returning by night to the frigate which was cruising out to sea, when it crashed into the sea on 29 November 1983, 2 nautical miles of Ras Beirut.
The three members of the crew of this aircraft (ensign Grilli, main master pilot Tanguy and first flying electronics master Owsianka) were killed in this incident.

Lieutenant Mark Adam Lange, US Navy, 26, 17/08/1957, Fraser Michigan USA

Pilot, A-6E Intruder Aircraft, Attack Squadron VA-85 “The Black Falcons”,

USS John F. Kennedy CV-67.

The Intruder from VA-85 was hit by an SA-7 or SA-9 missile into the engine nozzle right after dropping its bomb-load, while still in a dive through 1.800ft. The rear fuselage and one wing were immediately afire, and then the starboard engine exploded. The pilot, Lt. Mark “Doppler” Lange, did his best to keep the aircraft airborne and enable his bombardier/navigator (BN), Lt. Bobby Goodman, to eject safely. After almost colliding with the ground the aircraft was seen to pull up into the sky for the last time – and then it crashed on a 245m high hill, directly above a village surrounded by Syrian AAA positions. Lt. Lange ejected in the final moment, but his parachute failed to properly deploy by the time he hit the ground: his left leg was so severely injured, Lange died shortly after in the hands of several Syrian troops and Lebanese civilians. Goodman broke three ribs and injured the shoulder and a knee during the landing, but was otherwise OK. He was captured by the Syrians immediately afterward, and taken to Damascus.

On the evening of December 4, 1893, a reinforced squad of Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, led by Sgt Manuel A. Cox, came under attack while manning an observation post known as Checkpoint 7, south of Beirut International Airport (BIA), near the suburb known as Ash Shuwayfat.

The fighting positions at Checkpoint 7 were on top of two small 2-story buildings; the usable space of the rooftop locations measured roughly 9’x12′ each. The firefight lasted from approximately 1930 that evening until shortly after 2200. During the course of the action Sgt Cox controlled organic fires from 2/8’s assets, including small arms, mortars, artillery, 105mm tank main guns, as well as TOW and Dragon ATGMs.

As the firefight progressed other Marines in Cox’s squad rushed upstairs to assist their buddies and gain better fields of fire. Shortly after 2200 either a 120mm mortar round or a 122 rocket impacted the position. Nine Marines were killed, and two others on the roof were wounded.
